Restorations (also known as fillings) are required when a tooth is broken, cracked and/or decayed.  Dental decay is caused by bacteria using sugars to produce acids.  These acids dissolve the tooth surfaces causing them to break down and form cavities.

Once cavities are present a dental restoration is needed to stop the active decay.  We use all forms of restorative materials: amalgam composite and glass ionomers (tooth-coloured (white) fillings.

Restorations are used to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure.  They can also be used to restore aesthetics to your smile.

In consultation with you, your dentist will select the best material for your situation.
